“The Women” by Kristin Hannah

I loved this historical fiction book. Not only did the red cover with the Vietnamese helicopter attract my attention, I selected this powerful novel based on my past audiobook experience with Kristin Hannah’s The Nightingale and reading The Great Alone. I wanted to learn more about the war in Vietnam from the perspective of Frankie, who joined the Army Nurse Corps, experienced wartime trauma, and became one of the thousands of forgotten soldiers.

The Women is not an easy read, as Hannah expertly navigates the sacrifices and high price for heroism in an unpopular war. The story made my heart ache with each plot twist. Few times in my life have I encountered such a master of the craft who delivers seat-of-your-pants reading and learning. By far, The Women takes first place on my 2024 reading list.

If you enjoy learning about history from a fictional vantage point, I’d suggest The Women.
